First Aid for Choking People

Choking occurs when there is foreign matter, food, or fluid that is blocking the respiratory tract or air flow in the throat. To prevent fatal consequences, let's understand first aid for choking people. Choking cases generally afflict infants or children because they like to put various objects in the mouth. Whereas in adults, cases of choking usually occur as a result of swallowing food or drinks in a hurry.

How to Perform First Aid for Choking People

If it's not severe, choking might just make the sufferer feel something is up in the throat. In this condition, you can ask the choking person to cough to clear the blockage in the throat. In addition, you can also ask him to spit out objects that block his respiratory tract. But in more severe conditions, choking can make sufferers unable to speak or breathe. If not immediately helped, this condition can make the person lack of oxygen and lose consciousness. If you find a condition like this, there are a number of ways for people to choke first aid you can do:

Give a pat or punch behind your back

You can do this by standing behind the choking person, then ask him to lean forward. After that, give five strokes with the heel of your hand between the two shoulder blades. Repeat until a foreign object that has clogged out of your throat.

Perform abdominal thrusts

This technique is also called Heimlich maneuver, which is done by pressing the area of ​​the solar plexus firmly to remove the blockage of foreign objects in the throat. You can start standing behind the choking person, then wrap your arms around his waist and hug him tightly. Next, clench one hand directly above the solar plexus and pull the fist tightly with the other hand, pressing against the solar plexus as hard as possible. Do it five times, or repeat until a foreign object that clogs can come out of the throat. If the person is unable to breathe or is unconscious, seek medical help immediately, for example by bringing the patient to the nearest hospital or calling an ambulance. While waiting for medical help to come, you can try to do the RJP (heart and lung resuscitation) technique. But if you can't do it, look for people around who are able to do RJP techniques to save the lives of choked victims.

Special Handling to Help Choking Babies

How to help choking babies is not the same as helping adults choke. Some of the above techniques should not be done on babies. The first thing you can do to help your baby choke is to put the baby in a prone position on your lap, with his head lower than the body. Hold the baby's head by holding it on both cheeks to ensure the airway is open. Give five gentle but firm pats between the baby's shoulder blades while making sure that the clogging object has come out. It is important to give first aid to choking people immediately, so there are no life-threatening complications. Afterwards, continue to bring the patient to the hospital to get the necessary checks and treatments.
